I'm sure this concept isn't new.
Not at all.
But this is my take on it.
Mostly because I love the Mason Jars they come in!
Here is one in my Eggplant Parmesan Recipe!
I thoroughly wash the jars inside and out.
Using a bristle brush in circular motions to remove the label.
For the silver look, I spray 2 thin coats of Krylon's Mirror Like Glass spray paint.
It dries quickly and finishes beautifully.
Succulents are super hardy and come in so many shapes and colors.
I filled my jars 2/3 full with loose rocks and then the rest with a moisture control potting soil.
Then transplanted my succulents, roots and all, adding water.
At first, they need a good bit of water to stabilize.
After that, water when soil is completely dry, once a week or so.
In my jars I have:
Elephant Plant (learn more here)-the tall center
Blue Giant-the blue star
Sedum Album-small vines
Echeveria colorata-the red star
Another great way to repurpose the jars is to paint the inside.
I used some latex in this one and just swirled it around until coated.
It gives it a lovely color while maintaining the glassy shine.
And just for fun:
Did you know you can grow new leaves from store bought lettuce?
Just cut the bottom off about 1.5 inches and place in water.
The leafy lettuce above is about 1 week of growth.
My kids picked wildflowers on the walk home from the bus stop.
Aren't they sweet?
This post is my own opinion and was not compensated.
I am in no way associated with Classico brand.
I just really like these jars.

I love ALL of them - those mason jars ( that you spray painted with mercury ) from Classico - that's how they look when you remove the paper?

Well done!! I have yet to find this spray, but havent looked too hard! Thank you for the tutorial and pics!!
ReplyDeleteChristine, where are you from? Reason I ask, is that the wild flowers you show at the very end (the adorable pink ones), I have in our pasture (Manvel, TX)! I showed my mother (who loves wild flowers as well) to see if she knew what they were. She did not but would look it up. Do you know what they are? They are soooo adorable and I have huge patches of them all around. Thank you for your awesome posts. NEW FAN!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what they are either! But they grow like crazy here in Vail, AZ (south of Tucson). They are all over and are so beautiful!
DeleteLove these! Just to be sure, did you spray the inside of the jars?
ReplyDeleteThe outside!
DeleteLove the idea or recycling your jars! I am among the many who didn't know that the Classico jars were like that under the label.(And we use Classico!!) Thanks for sharing. I did know about the lettuce, but did you know you can do the same thing with celery? I read it on this website: http://www.deeprootsathome.com/re-growing-celery-from-cuttings/ She also has great pictures.
ReplyDeleteShe has a link from a friend that tells how how she starts hers in a saucer of warm water. I may have tot try the lettuce and celery this year. I would also love tomatoes. I'd have the beginnings of a good salad.
so I've be using classico sauce forever and I've never thought to re-purpose the jars. What a great idea! I'll be saving some of my jars and trying this out. Thanks for the idea :)
